Gearbox Software , in collaboration with 2K Games , released Borderlands 2 in 2012, capturing the hearts of gamers worldwide. This sequel builds upon its predecessor’s successful loot-and-shoot formula, set five years after the original on the chaotic planet of Pandora. ere at Player Opinion, picked our favorite Vault Hunter—cough, cough, Salvatore—and went on a mission to defeat the infamous Handsome Jack to prevent him from unleashing the power of a new Vault.

Borderlands 2 Game Review

Gameplay Experience: 18/25

Borderlands 2 offers a fun and engaging gaming experience, despite feeling a bit dated due to its 2012 release. The gameplay is balanced and fair, maintaining a sense of fun by not taking itself too seriously, unlike many other first-person shooters. Even on higher difficulty settings, the game feels satisfying and challenging without becoming frustrating. The controls are intuitive and user-friendly, accommodating both keyboard/mouse and game controllers. In-game decisions primarily revolve around character builds and weapon selections, adding depth to the gameplay but having minimal impact on the overall story. Nonetheless, the game is rewarding to play, whether you’re grinding end-game bosses for the perfect Conference Call or rerolling a new character. Borderlands 2 delivers a well-rounded and enjoyable experience that keeps players coming back for more.

Presentation & Immersion: 21/25

At Player Opinion, we found the comic book art style of Borderlands 2 extremely appealing, and though improved in Borderlands 3, it still remains iconic. The HUD seamlessly blends with this distinctive graphic style, offering familiarity and ease of use from the get-go, making the game incredibly accessible. Where Borderlands 2 excels over its sequels is in its writing. The game’s cheeky, fresh, and sarcastic tone, coupled with the exceptional voice acting of Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack, draws players into the story, often making you genuinely LOL. These elements add depth and engagement, contributing to the enduring appeal of the Borderlands series. The entire atmosphere of the game revolves around its wonderful characters, their witty dialogue, and believable personalities, further immersing players in the vibrant world of Pandora.

Design & Technical: 19/25

Borderlands 2 operates extremely well, clearly designed with the player in mind, making it easy to pick up and start playing. The AI is aggressive yet somewhat lacking in intelligence, which adds to the feeling of being swarmed during encounters. Some battles require strategic thinking as charging straight in will often lead to certain death. While the game’s settings are generally average, our gameplay experience was still smooth, with only minor technical hiccups that did not disrupt the overall flow. In terms of content, Borderlands 2 offers an acceptable amount, certainly surpassing Borderlands 3. There is plenty to do and explore, with each Vault Hunter bringing unique strengths to the table. However, there are some overpowered choices, which can be a blessing for players with skill issues like us.

The Skinny About Borderlands 2

Final Considerations: 23/25

Gearbox Software and 2K Games have delivered a first-person shooter that blends the longevity and replayability of a role-playing game seamlessly. Our journey across Pandora in Borderlands 2 (Steam Link), fighting the forces of Handsome Jack, was not just enjoyable but profoundly satisfying. At Player Opinion, we invested hundreds of hours into this game and found it to be a worthwhile and deeply immersive experience. While the presence of minor microtransactions is noted, they do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the game and are not necessary to play. Borderlands 2 offers an experience worth your time, particularly if you’re seeking something light-hearted and action-packed. The game’s vibrant world, quirky humor, and exhilarating loot explosions punctuate your journey, ensuring a thrilling and memorable gaming experience.
