Borderlands 3 Game Review

Gameplay Experience: 17/25

Borderlands 3 maintains the familiar essence of its predecessor, Borderlands 2, while introducing several quality-of-life improvements that enhance the overall gaming experience. The gameplay balance remains commendable, providing a fair and enjoyable challenge, even on higher difficulty settings. Controls are intuitive and user-friendly, ensuring ease of use and seamless navigation, with button mapping optimized for controller play. While in-game decisions primarily revolve around character builds and weapon selections, with no impact on the overall story. However, this does not diminish the sense of reward and satisfaction derived from gameplay. Whether it’s achieving the perfect gun roll or acquiring sought-after equipment through dedicated farming, the thrill of enhancing your build is a rewarding aspect that adds depth to the experience.

Presentation & Immersion: 18/25

Gearbox Software’s iconic comic book art style remains a cornerstone of the Borderlands series, evident in Borderlands 3’s visuals and familiar HUD. Coupled with the franchise’s signature sarcastic humor and slapstick storyline, the game offers an immersive atmosphere that fans have come to expect. However, some players may find Borderlands 3 slightly less enjoyable than its predecessor, as it aims for a broader, more PG-rated appeal. At Player Opinion, we believe this decision may have missed the mark, particularly in comparison to the memorable interactions with Handsome Jack and the humorously grotesque NPCs in Borderlands 2. These aspects added depth and engagement that seemed lacking in Borderlands 3, as well as its spin-off, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, as discussed in our review here.

Design & Technical: 18/25

Borderlands 3 operates as a finely tuned machine, showcasing meticulously designed mechanics that contribute to its overall polish. The aggressive AI, reminiscent of the Zerg from StarCraft 2, adds an exhilarating edge to encounters, particularly during challenging boss battles and endgame raids for the daring adventurer. While the game’s settings are generally average, our gameplay experience was generally smooth, with only minor technical hiccups that did not disrupt the overall flow. However, the game’s Achilles’ heel lies in its content. Despite a lengthy main storyline, gameplay can devolve into repetitive gear grinding, detracting from the overall enjoyment. The DLCs attempt to alleviate this issue, yet they often feel like essential content that should have been included in the base game – a critique especially directed at the Season Pass system.

The Skinny About Borderlands 3

Final Considerations: 20/25

Gearbox Software and 2K Games have delivered a first-person shooter that blends the longevity and replayability of a role-playing game seamlessly. Our journey through the galaxy in Borderlands 3 proved to be both enjoyable and satisfying, as we explored all available classes and reached endgame levels. At Player Opinion, we found the cost of the game to be a worthwhile investment, considering the extensive playtime it offers. While the presence of minor microtransactions is noted, they do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the game; however, the Season Pass does feel somewhat contentious, resulting in a slight deduction from its overall score. Nevertheless, Borderlands 3 (Steam Link) offers an experience worth your time, particularly if you’re seeking something light-hearted and action-packed – not to mention the exhilarating loot explosions that punctuate your journey.
