What happens when you blend cute woodland creatures with cult rituals, base-building, and frantic dungeon crawling? Cult of the Lamb, the 2022 indie roguelike from Massive Monster and Devolver Digital, manages to pull it off with surprising style. Its oddball charm, tight gameplay mechanics, and satisfying balance between chaos and control quickly won us over. Equal parts dark and delightful, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just stand out — it sticks with you long after you put the controller down.

Gameplay Experience: 18/25

We played Cult of the Lamb on the recommended difficulty setting and found the overall gameplay to strike a satisfying balance between challenge and reward. Difficulty scales progressively as your cult expands, creating a steady sense of escalation that keeps encounters from feeling stale. The controls are intuitive and well-suited to a controller setup (recommend by the devs), making both combat and base management feel smooth and accessible. While the game doesn’t hinge on constant decision-making, the choices it does offer carry real weight — some shape your cult’s development, while others affect the final outcome. This mix of meaningful choices and tight mechanics results in an experience that remains engaging throughout, from the early stages of founding your cult to the climactic endgame.

Presentation & Immersion: 21/25

One of the first things that stands out in Cult of the Lamb is its art style. The cartoon visuals strike a strange but effective balance between adorable and dark, making the entire game world feel oddly inviting. The clean, easy-to-read HUD fits in well without pulling you out of the experience. While the story itself is short and fairly simple, it doesn’t feel like a weak point — the game doesn’t rely on its plot to keep you engaged. Instead, the atmosphere, visuals, and sound design do the heavy lifting. There’s no traditional voice acting, but characters speak in a kind of animal gibberish that suits the world perfectly. It’s the kind of presentation that feels memorable without trying too hard and should hold up well over time.

Design & Technical: 20/25

Cult of the Lamb is thoughtfully designed, offering a surprisingly deep gameplay loop that combines base-building with dungeon crawling. Managing your followers—keeping them fed, healthy, and loyal—adds a layer of strategy that complements the fast-paced combat. There’s plenty of variety in the content, including side activities and rituals that keep the game from feeling repetitive. The AI doesn’t behave dynamically in the traditional sense, but that’s by design. Most enemies follow predictable patterns, which encourages players to study attack cycles and react accordingly. This pattern-based system fits the game’s pacing well. We also appreciated the robust settings menu, especially the accessibility options, which give players meaningful ways to adjust the experience to suit their preferences without compromising the core gameplay.

The Skinny About Cult of the Lamb

Final Considerations: 21/25

Cult of the Lamb (Steam Link) offers a good deal of replayability, whether it’s through the way you manage and treat your followers or the type of cult you choose to run, with the core combat remaining consistent. For those looking for even more content, there are optional DLCs that can extend your gameplay experience. We had a great time with our run, although towards the end of our 30-hour playthrough, our enthusiasm did start to dip, which is likely due to the game’s ideal playtime of around 20 hours (How Long to Beat Link). All things considered, it’s a great value, especially if you can catch it on sale, and definitely worth checking out for those seeking a roguelike with unique blend of strategy and action.
