Diablo IV Game Review
Gameplay Experience: 16/25
Diablo 4 draws players in with its addictive gameplay, where numbers explode across the screen, loot rains from chests, and the satisfying “bling” of rare item drops keeps you coming back for more. The controls are straightforward and easy to pick up, making it accessible to newcomers and veterans alike. For the first 40 hours or so, the gameplay loop feels rewarding, with milestones that are both fun and fulfilling. But once you transition into the endgame, the cracks start to show. Progression slows to a crawl, and the sense of excitement begins to fade. Build and item choices offer some depth, but they’re largely limited and lack any real impact on the world or its story. By the end, what was once a thrilling adventure starts to feel like a grind, with the endgame living up to the word “slog” in every sense.
Presentation & Immersion: 22/25
The main storyline is brilliantly written, with gruesome, captivating cinematics that keep you engaged throughout. Diablo 4 pulls you right into its world, with voice acting and music that really bring the story to life. Even the main villain is crafted in a way that makes you feel empathy, adding a surprising layer to the experience. The world itself is stunning—grotesque, sorrowful, and full of dark beauty. Some areas give off a nostalgic Diablo II vibe, with the return of the Butcher being a great nod to the past. From the detailed graphics to the immersive sound design, the intuitive HUD, and polished player screens, everything in Diablo IV feels like it was carefully crafted to draw you deeper into its dark, captivating world.
Design & Technical: 16/25
Diablo 4 follows the traditional ARPG formula with solid mechanics, though the skill tree feels somewhat basic. The addition of paragon points does add some depth, but it still doesn’t fully make up for the lack of variety early on. There’s a fair amount of content, but much of it feels repetitive, making the endgame less enticing. On the positive side, the AI and pathing work well, and our Necromancer build ran smoothly without any issues. However, technical problems were a consistent annoyance. After just 12 minutes of play, we encountered our first bug, forcing the game to repair itself. This happened multiple times, along with lighting errors in the prologue, random crashes, and server disconnects. We even got stuck at the title splash screen once. Audio issues also cropped up, though restarting the game seemed to fix them—turns out it was a Windows conflict. These ongoing technical glitches were frustrating and definitely impacted the overall experience.
The Skinny About Diablo IV
Final Considerations: 17/25
Overall, Diablo 4 (Steam Link) leaves us feeling conflicted. The main story is definitely worth the cost, offering a solid experience that will keep you engaged for a good amount of time. However, the endgame feels uninspired and tedious, which dampens the excitement once the main quest is over. Adding to the frustration are microtransactions, which feel predatory in a game you already have to pay for. This raises questions about whether the game’s value is truly justified. On the flip side, there’s a decent amount of replay value if you want to explore different characters, but the limited character slots feel like a greedy move. It’s hard not to feel torn, but when we break it down by cost per hour, we logged around 70 hours, which seems fair for the price. So, while it’s not without its flaws, we cautiously recommend Diablo IV for those looking for a solid story-driven experience.
