Divinity: Original Sin 2 by Larian Studios set a new standard for RPGs when it launched in 2017, paving the way for the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023. At Player Opinion, we gathered our party and mastered its deep, tactical combat as a ragtag group of four with the ultimate goal: becoming a God. The Divine was dead, the Void approached, and the dormant powers within us were on the verge of awakening. Adventure awaits!

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Game Review

Gameplay Experience: 20/25

A testament to Larian Studios’ commitment to delivering an accessible, absorbing, and thoroughly satisfying gaming experience, this game offers plenty of adventures and meaningful choices that shape the story in surprising ways. The controls are intuitive and easy to grasp, particularly with a keyboard and mouse, though we found controller play somewhat cumbersome. The gameplay progression is highly rewarding, with each new skill and magical ability feeling like a genuine achievement. However, this rewarding progression can lead to a balance issue, as even on the highest difficulties, players can become overwhelmingly powerful, making most encounters feel trivial. Despite this imbalance, the thrill of discovering new abilities and the satisfaction of character development kept us thoroughly engaged and entertained throughout our playthrough.

Presentation & Immersion: 20/25

In Divinity: Original Sin 2, players control a “Godwoken,” a Sourcerer capable of harnessing a powerful magic known as Source. This compelling premise drives the plot forward, engaging players from the beginning. The game boasts visually polished environments and immersive sounds and music, enhancing the overall experience. However, as the game progresses, the later acts seem shorter and less well-developed compared to the initial ones, leading to some breaks in immersion. Notably, the first two acts are fantastic, while the third is lackluster, and the fourth, although well-crafted, feels too short. Additionally, we encountered some issues with the user interface. Although not terrible, it felt somewhat “janky” and cumbersome, resulting in an average HUD. Despite these minor drawbacks, the presentation and immersion remain strong aspects of the game.

Design & Technical: 19/25

Mechanically, Divinity: Original Sin 2 operates with impressive efficiency, allowing players to use skills, abilities, items, and even the environment to their advantage. The NPC AI is formidable, presenting a constructive challenge that encourages players to learn, adapt, and refine their strategies. The game offers robust and customizable settings, along with various difficulty levels, catering to a wide range of player preferences. There is plenty of content throughout the game, and encounters feel fresh and engaging rather than grindy. As mentioned, Acts 3 and 4 are somewhat disappointing compared to the earlier acts, but this doesn’t significantly detract from the overall experience. Despite some minor bugs and quirks, the game performs exceptionally well, maintaining a high level of technical quality throughout.
