Hogwarts Legacy Game Review

Gameplay Experience: 20/25

We have solid numbers here regarding how the gameplay experience rates among those of us at PO. The controls proved to be intuitive and engaging throughout our playthrough. Progression was rewarding and contributed to a satisfying overall experience. However, we observed a slight imbalance. At a certain point, the game becomes less challenging, and the sense of being overwhelmingly powerful diminishes the thrill of encounters with boss characters. It raises questions about the possibility of defeating them right from the start. Additionally, our in-game choices seemed to lack significant consequences. Whether embracing the role of a dark wizard or using unforgivable curses in public spaces, NPCs exhibited little reaction, resulting in a world that felt hollow, almost flat, where actions seemed to have minimal impact on the overall experience.

Presentation & Immersion: 21/25

Scoring high, Avalanche and their partners (Warner Bros. Games) have truly excelled in this aspect. Hogwarts Legacy boasts stunning visuals, with richly detailed environments and settings teeming with life. The atmosphere is breathtaking, and the visual aesthetics set a new standard for future games. Complemented by satisfying sound effects and captivating music contribute to the immersive experience. To top it all off, the polished and intuitive HUD seamlessly blends in with the gameplay without being obtrusive. This gaming experience not only meets but exceeds expectations, signaling a level of quality that is likely to influence the industry moving forward.

Design & Technical: 19/25

Once again, we have respectable numbers here, though the content quality and AI behavior led to some deductions. Hogwarts Legacy’s downfall lies in its content, which could have delved even deeper with more quests and a more intricate storyline. Despite the visually impressive broom rides, they often felt like mundane deliveries. Combat encounters, too, seemed somewhat purposeless, leaving us to wonder if the developers felt pressured to hurriedly conclude the game. On the positive side, settings and customization, while not mind-blowing, were acceptable. Fortunately, we encountered no game-breaking bugs, with only a single crash report, which, if we’re honest, might have been our own fault.

The Skinny About Hogwarts Legacy

Final Considerations: 20/25

Concluding our exploration of Hogwarts Legacy, the game undeniably stands as an immensely satisfying experience. The noteworthy decision to release it without microtransactions (as of December 2023) speaks volumes about the developers, offering a rare testament to their credibility and integrity in an industry where such values are increasingly rare. Additionaly, they have successfully crafted a beautiful representation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter universe, well deserving of your time. Our only gripe lies in the lack of replay value, but as a one-shot gaming experience, it is certainly worth the full price to play.
