Owlcat Games, creators of the popular Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Kingmaker video games, have partnered with Games Workshop for their latest release, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. This story-driven isometric RPG is packed with rich lore and strategic choices. At Player Opinion, we took up the role of a Rogue Trader from the Von Valancius dynasty, where we embraced the thrill of becoming one of the most powerful forces in the Koronus Expanse.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Game Review
Gameplay Experience: 20/25
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader brings Owlcat Games’ signature attention to detail, offering a richly developed experience steeped in lore. Each choice you make in the game feels impactful, from interacting with NPCs to building your character. Decisions have real consequences, reinforcing the weight of the Rogue Trader’s role. However, the sheer range of skills, abilities, talents, and heroic actions can be daunting at first—we found using a guide helpful in planning our character and companion builds. Despite the game’s initial complexity, progression is rewarding, with balanced gameplay and a fair, moderately challenging learning curve that gradually builds player engagement. Be prepared to read through extensive lore and options, but the payoff in satisfying milestones makes it well worth the effort.
Presentation & Immersion: 18/25
Owlcat Games’ attention to detail is usually impressive, but certain aspects of this release feel undercooked. In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, small issues, like missing NPC portraits during dialogue, disrupt immersion. If we can interact with an NPC, they deserve a unique image. Additionally, the game often leans toward reading over playing, with an abundance of written content. While much of it is informative and engaging, the sheer volume sometimes detracts from the experience. Despite these points, the game remains immersive overall, supported by a strong soundtrack and atmospheric sound effects that pull you into its world. Visually, however, the experience falls short. The character models and cutscenes lack the polish expected from a 2023 release, which is disappointing in an otherwise remarkable world.
Design & Technical: 20/25
Where Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader truly excels is in its game settings, offering a wealth of customization options that allow for a highly tailored experience. The combat is equally impressive, with the AI making full use of its abilities to challenge you—sometimes leading to shocking, hard-hitting defeats. We did rely on a guide from Neoseeker for our playthrough, as the sheer amount of content was overwhelming, and we didn’t want to miss anything. In typical Owlcat fashion, the first Act includes a somewhat timed mission, which, while adding tension, feels more punishing than beneficial. On the technical side, we encountered no game-breaking issues or major bugs. However, it’s worth noting that we played several patches in, so we can’t speak to the game’s state at launch.
The Skinny About Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
Final Considerations: 20/25
At Player Opinion, we clocked in over 120 hours of gameplay and thoroughly enjoyed our playthrough of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader (Steam Link). For the time invested, we can confidently say the game offers excellent value. With no microtransactions, an abundance of content, and a combat system that’s deeply satisfying once you fully understand its mechanics, the game keeps you hooked from start to finish. Additionally, with at least three distinct main story paths to explore, the game offers solid replayability, ensuring plenty of reasons to return. Overall, we highly recommend this title to fans of tactical, turn-based gameplay and lore-rich narratives.
